The #massisolationFORMAT project was launched by QUAD and FORMAT International Photography Festival in mid-March 2020, just 3 days before the UK entered its first lockdown. Since then we have been inviting all image makers from around the world to participate in documenting the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic, charting the time before, after and during the lockdowns.
Throughout this project we focused on the year 2020, presenting an imperfect vision through a shattered lens, in a previously unforeseeable situation we found ourselves instructed to stay at home, locked down in a global curfew. Apocalyptic narratives combined with dystopian futures to become a reality, as life as we knew it slowly faded into memory. As a new world order started to take shape, the situation was difficult for many and a creative provocation for others, all the while the digital realm was like the wild west of the past where entrepreneurial individuals and organisations were clamouring to get the best claim on audiences and extract the riches from this new land.
The pandemic also gave humanity a much needed pause of everyday life, to stop, rethink and reinvent for better or worse. Throughout the project it became clear to see that during this enforced period of slowing down, people were looking more closely at their living spaces, neighbours, the light on the wall, the view from windows, aging fruit, homeschooling, diy, attention was brought back to the microcosm of our domestic spaces and the people that we share it with, or not. Of course there are many people that this had already been a reality for, being housebound is not a new thing, but the equalising effect of the lockdown en masse enabled us to relate to each other through unique shared experiences. Indeed where space is more scarce, people found a new love for the space right outside or even on their doorsteps.
Photography became a lifeline to many people to communicate and express themselves. Fear, loneliness, anxiety, tender moments, separation and loss sat alongside play, creativity, invention, kindness and a real sense of community. The sense of the commonality of strangers had been lost in many ways along with the pervasive rise of global capitalism, in which our working lives take us far from the place where we live. Reclaiming space was a common sight across the world, where people found solace in the woods, or any place in between on the streets to get some fresh air, see the sun or exercise whilst eyeing each other suspiciously and observing the social distancing rules. Rethinking our public spaces is one of the many new norms that we have had to navigate during this era of Covid-19.
To date we have received over 40,000 submissions from 90+ countries which has allowed us to see both the unity and diversity in the experience of this global event. From rainbows in windows supporting NHS workers in the UK to the striking and obscure self-portraits made with limited resources, to front-line staff fighting the virus in hospitals in Iran. The images we have received have been humorous, shocking and absolutely moving. It is too soon to understand the impact and trauma of this pandemic, these are certainly challenging times, but what is clear is that this is an important moment in history that had to be documented.
For FORMAT21 we are working with The People's Picture - Helen Marshall, to create large-scale digital interactive presentations together with FORMAT Louise Fedotov-Clements, Niamh Treacy and Debbie Cooper; New Art City; Janine Derbyshire, Jonny Hill, Laura Phillips, Derby Museum and Art Gallery; Paul Lowe, Brigitte Lardinois, OisĂn Davies, LCC/Photography and the Archive Research Centre to select images and series to feature in our exhibitions, in an online archive, online galleries and a large scale public artwork wrapping QUAD in thousands of photographs. Visitors to the online gallery will be able to zoom into the individual photos and explore each of the contributions.

Window visit. Today marks 206 days since Iâve been able to hug dad. A window visit was organised for dad and I at his Aged Care home. We have been very lucky with Covid cases where dad is. Only the one case. Before Covid I used to visit dad nearly every day and hugs were always on the agenda. At first dad was unsure what the visit was all about. He saw me but was confused, unsure why heâd been placed in a chair by a window. I put my hand on the glass. He did the same. I knew at that moment dad was okay. This photo is from an ongoing project of mine called âThat place he goesâ. This day last week I enjoyed photographing some of my near-neighbours, including this family whom I had rarely encountered previously. Really love the warmth in their hearts, and the colour of her nails.
Nearly every day I cycle past Kittyâs eco house and was always attracted by the modern contemporary look of her home. I posted a note through her letterbox to ask if she would like to be part of my project. At first she declined, but at least she responded! However, the next day she agreed once she had some time to go through my images.

The 19th in a series of portraits of people self isolating at home. Each has given their own personal reflections on the times we are living through. Photographed with zero physical contact through closed windows (with permission!) and communicated via phone. Chelsea âThe shock and reality of COVID-19 came early for me in late January. Some of my family in China are health professionals, and everyone was nervous. I lost nights of sleep and would be short of breath just thinking about it (This was still in January). Meanwhile, experts were dismissing human-to-human transmission, more concerned for the market and preexisting issues than the then-preventable virus. I honestly thought that health experts and elected leaders would be more responsible, more prudent, more proactive. I also thought that my acquaintances would care more than they did. Itâs sad when knowledge becomes a hindrance to understanding. I value peopleâs words and opinions a little less now, which is partly sad but mostly liberating. I donât need the average stranger to validate me anymore. Actual social distancing has been restful. There's still so much I have access to - like dancing and reconnecting with friends. I don't feel the pressure to be productive, but I'm not any less productive than before. I haven't seen my boyfriend in over a month. But other than that, I really enjoy it.â #selfisolation #stayingathome #socialdistancing #thenewnormal #coronadiariesmontreal #coronadiaries #massisolationformat #rainbows #cavabienaller #portrait #Fotophoto #framingeverydaylife #journaldeconfinement #thismtl #cadrerlequotidien

Black Swan An unpredictable or unforeseen event, typically one with extreme consequences. During 5 weeks of isolation in South Africa I decided to turn the lens on myself to explore themes of vulnerability, isolation and mental health through a series of self portraits. Domesticity and womanhood have always been intrinsically connected, yet it is being challenged during this time. As a photographer confined at home I begin to question parts of my identity as I explore the theme of anonymity in relation to womanhood and domesticity. #isolation #coronavirus #mentalhealth #vulnerability #womanhood #domesticity #documentaryphotography #fineartphotography #contemporaryphotography #viallinthistogether #womenphotographer #documentingwomen #luciecovidphoto @luciefoundation @oathmagazine @womenphotograph @wpthejournal @massisolation #massisolation #massisolationformat
This giant photo mosaic has been created by The Peopleâs Picture as part of the #massisolationFORMAT project. The online interactive high resolution 180 giga pixel image is composed of a total of 180,574 photos. When the viewer zooms in they are able to see each individual photo from #massisolationFORMAT up close and in detail. Inspired by the 1937 Mass Observation project, FORMAT invited people to use the hashtag #massisolationFORMAT to create a visual record of the Covid19 crisis on Instagram. This mass-participation project, set up at the beginning of the March 2020 lockdown, received over 40,000 photo submissions from 90+ countries, sharing peopleâs experiences living through a pandemic. The images came from a wide range of people â photographers, professionals, amateurs, members of the public â and came together as a large scale photo mosaic to commemorate this moment in history, and celebrate our collective emergence into the ânew normalâ. Chosen by FORMAT, the photograph Lovers was shot by Argentian photographers Luisa Magdalena and Nahuel Alfonso and inspired by RenĂš Magritteâs painting Les Amants. A double self-portrait, created in response to the Covid19 pandemic, its painterly quality of colours and soft light coupled with its youthful optimism of young love made it the perfect contender for the giant mosaic, which has been created and produced by The Peopleâs Picture.

Museum of Making Derby Silk Mill widely regarded as the site of the worldâs first modern factory, built in the valley that changed the world. Industry brought prosperity to some and poverty and wage slavery to others. Yet it shaped Derby as a city of making and creativity. Industrial society led to the creation of civic institutions and stimulated a civil society in which people campaigned for social and political rights. At Derby Silk Mill, the Museum of Making is currently under construction and will be opening in 2021. Celebrating the areaâs rich history of innovation, the Museum of Making in the Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO World Heritage Site will be a contemporary space telling Derbyâs 300-year history of making to inspire new creativity. Designed and made by the people and industries of Derby with exhibits, workshops, activities and events, thereâs will be something here for everyone including a new cafĂ©, shop and venue hire space.
